Leveraging Research Infrastructures for Addressing Climate Change Risks

Event Description

Climate change poses a significant threat, demanding a coordinated global response. Research Infrastructures play a critical role by providing data and expertise to understand and address climate change-driven risks.

This session explores how RIs from various regions can be leveraged for comprehensive climate action strategies.

Agenda

  • Welcome: Short introduction and explanation of the role of RIs in tackling climate change risks (Sanna Sorvari, Luke & Magdalena Brus, EGI Foundation)
  • IRISCC Project: A detailed explanation of the project’s goals and how it integrates RIs in Europe to address climate risks. Emphasise the potential for applying similar approaches in other regions (Janne Rinne, Luke, Finland)
  • Focus on needed Whole System approach in addressing climate risks (Michael Mirtl, UFZ, eLTER)
  • Comparative Regional Focus on Climate Risks
    • A. Focus on Droughts, Heatwaves and their impact on Food security
      • EU RI Perspective: Werner Kutsch, ICOS ERIC: Short presentation on how ICOS (and other EU RIs) addresses droughts (use case) and informs climate policy.
      • Non-EU RI Perspective:
        • SAEON (South Africa): TBC
        • TERN (Australia):TBC
    • B. Focus on Flooding and Landslides and their risks on economies
      • Non-EU RI Perspective: ASEAN Contributions (TBC):
      • EU RI Perspective: EU Counterpart (TBC)
    • C. Focus on Air Quality and its impact on Human health
      • Non-EU perspective: TBC
      • EU RI perspective: EIRENE RI (Jana Klanova, Recetox, CZ)

Break

  • Interactive Panel Discussion
    • Experts from RIs will discuss:
      • Building a collaborative interdisciplinary RI framework for global climate risk mitigation and adaptation to support global climate risk mitigation and adaptation?
      • Fostering international cooperation for data sharing and knowledge exchange across regions to address climate risks.  ○ Identifying gaps and opportunities for RI development in different regions to address local and global climate challenges.
      • Discussion on key themes like data-sharing, interdisciplinary collaboration and potential barriers for collaboration

Expected Outcome of the session:

  • Identification of strategies for a more integrated RI framework for comprehensive climate risk mitigation across regions
  • Promotion of international collaboration among RIs across scientific domains to address global climate-change related challenges.
