ASEAN – A Brief Introduction
ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a regional organization comprising ten member states committed to fostering economic growth, social progress, and stability in Southeast Asia. Established in 1967, ASEAN operates on principles of consensus, non-interference, and mutual respect among its diverse member nations. Through its three pillars, Political-Security Community, Economic Community, and Socio-Cultural Community, ASEAN aims to enhance regional integration, promote peace and stability, and address common challenges such as economic disparities and security threats. ASEAN’s achievements include regional economic cooperation through trade agreements like AFTA, cultural exchanges, and joint efforts in disaster management and environmental sustainability. Despite challenges such as regional conflicts and socio-economic inequalities, ASEAN continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the political, economic, and social landscape of Southeast Asia.
The ten ASEAN Member States are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam. Timor-Leste is expected to join the association in the near future.
