Decreasing the environmental impact of Research Infrastructures
Greening Future Research Infrastructure: Improving energy efficiency, decreasing environmental impact and supporting researchers
Monday 2 December, 9:00am – 12:00pm, W Hotel Side Room
Focus
Climate change and environmental degradation are affecting all of our society activities, including living environment, industry and research. The increased focus should be placed on public policies and investments fostering sustainable growth and building on technological developments especially in the area of green ICT and energy efficiency. Research infrastructures play a key role in this context, as drivers through scientific discoveries and scientific advances that address societal challenges, such as climate change, and as first adopters of the green transition through innovative technologies, digitalisation and other solutions that can facilitate operational and environmental sustainability.
The key talks and discussions of this event will address different aspects of improving energy efficiency and decreasing the environmental impact of the Research Infrastructures, including technical solutions, standards and regulations compliance, adoption of best practices in digital infrastructure operations, and sustainability policy recommendations. The workshop will also discuss the role of research infrastructures to support research for climate action and adaptation by providing essential data and tools for generating scientific knowledge. New/Growing demand for greening modern/future Research Infrastructures is defined by the growing digitalisation of science and research, in particular, the use/adoption of generative AI technologies and tools (pervasive AI) for conducting research and managing RI operations.
Organisers
This side event is organised by the group of European projects and cooperating European and International RIs to present existing/ongoing development on improving the energy efficiency of existing scientific facilities (such as high energy consuming accelerators) and architecture and technical solutions for building and operating future digital RI that will address such factors as energy efficiency, environmental impact and research tools to optimise scientific workflow (and ensure research reproducibility).
The event program is planned to cover the recent developments in Europe such as ESFRI discussion on RI sustainability and energy efficiency and numerous national initiatives in Europe. It also intends to facilitate cooperation with the Australian research community.
The event program includes key contributors/speakers conducting research, development and operation of modern digital RIs and large research facilities. The program will also include round table discussion to benefit from involving the audience representing different aspects of (digital/digitalised/future digital) RIs development and operation. The expected outcome will workshop summary and opinion paper.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters throughout Australia, and pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise the importance of connection to culture, land, kinship and community to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander families. We acknowledge the cultural practices and traditions still carried out today and being passed down to future generations.
